Can you copyright AI music?
Updated · AI Vocals Generator
Partly. In the US, copyright protects what a human wrote or made, even inside a song that also has AI-generated parts: your lyrics, your beat, your edits and arrangement. It does not extend to purely AI-generated material, and the US Copyright Office says prompts alone don't give enough control to make you the author (its report "Copyright and Artificial Intelligence, Part 2", January 29, 2025, read on 2026-10-30). This is a summary, not legal advice.

Your words
[Verse] Woke up early, city still asleep Coffee in my hand and a secret I keep Traffic lights are blinking just for me Every green a little bit of free [Chorus] This is my Saturday, nowhere to be Turn up the radio, sing it with me No alarms, no deadlines, only the sea This is my Saturday, finally free [Verse] Sneakers on the pavement, sun on my face No one here is asking me to win the race Call my best friend, tell her meet me there Salt in the wind and sand in our hair [Chorus] This is my Saturday, nowhere to be Turn up the radio, sing it with me No alarms, no deadlines, only the sea This is my Saturday, finally free

What the US Copyright Office concluded
- Copyright protects the original expression in a work created by a human author, even if the work also includes AI-generated material.
- Copyright does not extend to purely AI-generated material, or material where there is insufficient human control over the expressive elements.
- With today's generally available tools, prompts alone don't provide sufficient control.
- Human authors keep copyright in their own work that's perceptible in AI outputs, and in the creative selection, arrangement or modification of the outputs.
- Whether a person's contribution is enough is decided case by case, under existing law, with no new law needed.
What that means for a song
| Part of the song | Protected? |
|---|---|
| Lyrics you wrote | Yes: they're your writing, even when an AI sings them. |
| A beat or a vocal you recorded and uploaded | Yes: it stays your work, and here it isn't changed. |
| The AI's vocal, melody or instrumental from a prompt | No, on its own: it's AI-generated material. |
| Your edits: cutting takes together, rearranging, adding your own parts | Possibly, case by case, as creative selection, arrangement or modification. |
Can I still release and sell it?
Yes. Copyright is about stopping others from copying; you don't need it to release a song. On this site you keep what you make and may use it commercially, as long as the words and any file you upload are yours to use. What you may not be able to do is stop someone from reusing the AI-generated parts.
Laws differ by country, and this is about the US. If a song matters commercially, ask a lawyer where you live.
How to keep more of the song yours
- Write the lyrics yourself instead of letting the AI write them.
- Bring your own beat or vocal and let the AI add only the other part: the AI Vocals tool adds a voice to your beat and leaves the beat unchanged.
- Edit the result: combine the best lines of both takes, add your own instruments or harmonies in a DAW.
- Keep your drafts, project files and dates as a record of what you made.
